Transit times, import approvals and the crops that actually move from Egypt into Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam in 2026/2027, with pack formats and container quantities for volume buyers.

Reefer container vessel leaving an Egyptian export port

Southeast Asia is a long-transit market for Egyptian produce, typically 18 to 28 days port to port with one transhipment, so only crops that hold condition for that distance are worth loading. In practice that means onion, garlic, dates, pomegranate, table grape in the early window, and frozen product. This page covers the routing, the approvals and the pack formats for Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam in the 2026/2027 season.

How Long Does the Sea Leg Take from Egypt?

There is no direct weekly reefer service from Egypt to most Southeast Asian ports, so almost every booking transhipments at Jebel Ali, Colombo, Singapore or Port Klang. Add the transhipment window when you plan shelf life at arrival.

Which Egyptian Crops Actually Survive the Distance?

Onion and garlic are the backbone. Golden onion in 5, 10 or 20 kg mesh at 0 to 2 degrees Celsius with high air exchange arrives in sound condition after a four-week run if the crop was properly cured before loading. Garlic behaves the same way and is often loaded in the same container.

Dates travel well because they are a dry product. Semi-dry and dry grades in 5 or 10 kg cartons ship in a dry container without temperature control, which removes reefer cost from a long transit.

Pomegranate is the strongest fresh fruit for this distance. Wonderful holds four to six weeks at 5 to 7 degrees Celsius when harvested at the right maturity and packed with adequate ventilation, which makes an October to December Southeast Asia programme realistic.

Frozen product is the safest of all. IQF strawberry, okra and molokhia at minus 18 degrees Celsius are unaffected by transit length, only by the integrity of the cold chain.

Citrus is possible into the region but competes directly against Chinese, Australian and South African supply, and the freight distance rarely favours Egypt except where a buyer specifically wants Egyptian Valencia for juice quality.

What Approvals Does the Importer Need?

The exporter side is consistent across all three markets: a phytosanitary certificate issued by the Egyptian plant quarantine authority, certificate of origin, commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. The full set is described in our guide to export documents on Egyptian produce.

The importer side is where the three markets differ sharply. Indonesia operates a horticultural import licensing system that requires the buyer to hold both an agriculture ministry recommendation and a trade ministry import approval before the shipment sails, and these are issued for defined product categories, quantities and periods. Vietnam applies plant quarantine import permits and, for several fresh fruits, a bilateral market access protocol that must be in place before the first container. Malaysia is the most straightforward of the three, with clearance handled by the quarantine and inspection service on arrival against the phytosanitary certificate.

Confirm the current licence position with your own customs broker before the booking is fixed. Import licensing rules in this region change between seasons, and a container that sails against an expired approval sits at the destination at the buyer’s cost.

How Should the Container Be Built?

A 40 foot high cube reefer takes 20 pallets and 20 to 24 tonnes of payload depending on the product and the destination road limit. For a first shipment, a single-product load is easier to clear than a mixed one, because each item in a mixed container may need its own licence line. Buyers who want several items in one box should read our note on reefer container loading and pallet configuration by crop before fixing the packing list.
