A pomegranate size chart for Egyptian Wonderful and 116 export fruit: count per 4.5 kg carton, average fruit weight, diameter band and which sizes each market buys. Includes carton formats and container loads.

A pomegranate size chart converts a count into a fruit weight and a diameter, which is the only way two parties in different countries can agree what they are buying. Egyptian export pomegranate is sold by count per carton, not by millimetre, so a buyer asking for size 10 is asking for ten fruit in a 4.5 kg tray, or about 450 g each. The tables below give the full count range PEI Trade packs for the 2026/2027 Wonderful and 116 season.

Counts, weights and diameters

Weights below are derived from a 4.5 kg net tray divided by the count. Diameter bands are indicative rather than contractual, because fruit shape varies between Wonderful and 116 at the same weight.

Carton formats and what fits a container

Three formats cover almost all Egyptian pomegranate shipments. The 4.5 kg single-layer tray is the retail format and the one the size chart above is built on. The 9 kg two-layer carton carries the same counts at double the quantity and is used for wholesale. Bulk 10 kg cartons are packed to a weight rather than a count and are only suitable where the buyer regrades on arrival.

Pomegranate carton formats and approximate 40 ft high-cube reefer loads from Egypt.
FormatNet weightSold byApprox cartons per 40 ft HC
Single-layer tray4.5 kgCount4,400 to 4,600
Two-layer carton9 kgCount2,200 to 2,300
Bulk carton10 kgWeight1,950 to 2,050

All three land in the same place, at roughly 20 tonnes of fruit in a 40 ft high-cube reefer. Pallet count and carton count vary with pallet footprint and stacking height, so treat the figures above as planning numbers and confirm the exact pallet pattern on the proforma.

How to specify a size on the order

State the count, the carton format and the tolerance together. A workable clause reads: 4.5 kg single-layer tray, count 10, minimum 90 percent of fruit within the declared count, balance one count either side. Without a tolerance clause a size dispute has nothing to be measured against. Season windows and variety differences between Wonderful and 116 are covered in the Egyptian pomegranate export guide, and how Egyptian fruit sits against other origins is in the origin comparison.

PEI Trade exports this fruit and is not a neutral grading authority. The counts above are the ones our packhouses run.
