Green peas are one of Egypt’s flagship frozen vegetables — sweet, bright-green peas shelled and IQF-frozen within hours of harvest, before their natural sugars turn to starch. A cool growing season and fast-moving freezing lines let Egypt supply tender, sweet peas (including premium petit pois) year-round to the Gulf, Europe and beyond. This guide is the hub for importers: what Egypt grows, when it ships, the markets it serves, the specifications buyers ask for and the compliance behind every consignment.
Quick answer: Egypt is a leading exporter of frozen (IQF) green peas — standard garden peas and premium small petit pois — plus some fresh pods (sugar snap/snow), as part of its large frozen-vegetable export sector. The fresh crop is winter–spring (cool season, roughly December–March); frozen is processed in season and shipped year-round. Speed from field to freezer is critical for sweetness. Fresh peas trade under HS 0708.10 and frozen under HS 0710.21. Peas store cold near 0°C (not chilling-sensitive). Markets include the Gulf, the EU, the Middle East and Russia. | Form / grade | Description | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Frozen petit pois | Small, sweet, tender (IQF) | EU & premium retail |
| Frozen garden peas | Standard size peas (IQF) | Gulf, Middle East, Russia |
| Frozen mixed | Peas & carrots / mixed veg | Retail & foodservice |
| Fresh pods (snap/snow) | Edible-pod mangetout (airfreight) | EU premium fresh |
The fresh pea crop is the cool season (roughly December to March). Because the dominant form is frozen IQF, the harvest is processed and stored, so Egypt supplies peas year-round. Growing is concentrated in Nubaria, Beheira, the Delta and Upper Egypt. Exact windows shift year to year with planting and weather.
Fresh peas are traded under HS code 0708.10, frozen under HS 0710.21.
Fresh peas require a phytosanitary certificate (pests include pea moth and aphids), compliance with destination MRLs (EU: Regulation (EC) No 396/2005), and GLOBALG.A.P. with ISPM 15 packaging and traceability. Frozen peas are a processed food and additionally need food-safety management (HACCP, and where required BRCGS / ISO 22000) with microbiological control. Egyptian green peas are not on the EU’s enhanced official-controls list (Regulation (EU) 2019/1793), so they are not subject to increased border checks — standard MRL and phytosanitary rules apply.
The fresh crop is the cool season (roughly December to March); frozen peas are available year-round.
