Egypt is one of the world’s major strawberry exporters — and a leading source of frozen (IQF) strawberries for the global food industry. A warm winter climate lets Egypt pick fresh strawberries when most of the Northern Hemisphere cannot, while a large freezing industry supplies processors year-round. This guide is the hub for importers: what Egypt produces (fresh and frozen), when it ships, the markets it serves, the specifications buyers ask for and the compliance behind every consignment.

Quick answer: Egypt is the world’s largest exporter of frozen (IQF) strawberries — around 27–28% of global supply (roughly US$670–700 million in 2025) — and a top-five strawberry producer (about 470,000–690,000 tons a year). The fresh season runs roughly December to April (peak January–March), counter-seasonal to Europe; frozen strawberries ship year-round from cold storage. The dominant variety is Festival, alongside Fortuna, Sabrina and Winter Dawn. Fresh strawberries trade under HS code 0810.10 and frozen under HS 0811.10. Why Egyptian strawberries

  • Counter-seasonal fresh supply: Egypt harvests fresh strawberries through the European winter, filling a gap when local supply is absent.
  • Major frozen / IQF industry: large freezing capacity supplies processors (jam, bakery, dairy, smoothies) year-round.
  • Flavour and colour: warm days and cool nights give sweet, deep-red fruit that performs well fresh and frozen.
  • Cost and proximity: competitive pricing and short sea/air routes to Europe, the Gulf and beyond.
  • Scale: established growing regions in the Nile Delta and reclaimed land support large, consistent volumes.

Egyptian strawberry varieties

Most Egyptian strawberry plant material is of US or European origin. Festival is the dominant variety — firm, sweet and well suited to both fresh shipping and freezing. Fortuna, Sabrina and Winter Dawn are also widely grown, chosen for early production, firmness and colour. See the varieties guide in this hub for detail.

Season and availability

The fresh export season runs from about December to April, peaking January to March — squarely in the European winter window. Frozen and IQF strawberries are produced through the season and held in cold storage, so Egypt can supply the processing industry year-round. Growing is concentrated in Qalyubia, Sharqia, Beheira, Ismailia and Nubaria.

Key export markets

  • Fresh: the Gulf and Saudi Arabia are major destinations, with the EU and UK taking fresh fruit during the winter window.
  • Frozen / IQF: the EU processing industry is the main market, alongside Russia and the Gulf.

Specifications and grades

  • Fresh: Class I dessert fruit, sized and coloured to specification, packed in 250–500 g punnets, pre-cooled and shipped at ~0°C.
  • Frozen: IQF whole/sliced or block, graded by size (e.g. caliber bands for whole) and quality (Grade A / B), held at −18°C.
  • Pricing & terms: FOB or CIF; for frozen, by specification (variety, grade, cut).

Compliance and food safety

Fresh strawberries require a phytosanitary certificate, compliance with EU residue limits (MRLs, Regulation (EC) No 396/2005) and increasingly GLOBALG.A.P. certification. Important update: from 18 February 2026, Egyptian fresh strawberries were added to the EU’s enhanced official-controls list for pesticide residues (Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/1793, as amended by Regulation (EU) 2026/194) — so a set share of consignments now faces increased identity and physical checks at EU border control posts, making rigorous pesticide management and pre-export residue testing essential. Frozen strawberries are a processed food: the baseline is HACCP with a GFSI-recognised scheme (BRCGS, IFS or ISO 22000) and microbiological control; frozen berries can also draw EU scrutiny for foodborne viruses (norovirus, Hepatitis A), so strong hygiene, worker-health controls and testing are essential.
